Windows users who are happy with their 'old' XP operating system, may rejoice as Microsoft has decided to extend the OS's life, effectively meaning that PC manufacturers can continue to bundle Windows XP as the default OS as per customer requirements.

Microsoft had earlier set this 'kill-date' as January 31st 2009 but has now extended it to June 30th, an extra five-month period, as a result of lobbying by several PC makers. Many PC manufacturers still offer their consumers a choice of shifting to XP if they already have purchased Vista Ultimate or Business editions.

However, the January 31st date will still apply to small vendors who deal with assembled PCs. Microsoft claims that XP has been granted the extension in order to accommodate current XP users who are taking time to shift to Vista.
